Happy Birthday, Crazy Pants!

So, three months of all-day morning sickness, a big take off of my Etsy shop, and a baby later, I'm back with a cake! LOL! I did do a triple chocolate cake back in the early winter, and a BIG American flag cake for a soldier homecoming in the late winter, but I was too busy crocheting for my Etsy shop and didn't post them. They were pretty, but not over the top. Now my toddler is two today, so this is the cake his daddy and I made for him!
Daddy baked, filled, and iced the cake in white. I made the characters out of modeling chocolate and piped the decorations. Do you know where the characters are from? A children's program (originally in Spanish) on PBS called Pocoyo! Crazy Pants is a fan! Pocoyo is on the top of the cake and below him is Sleepy Bird.

The blue boy is Pocoyo. He isn't quite as smooth as I'd like. He was our first attempt, redone. Because we re-heated the modeling chocolate, he got grainy and hard to work with. Live and learn! Which is exactly what we did and his pink friend, Elly, looks great!

This is Pato . . . Pocoyo's duck friend.

The sides feature green and blue stripes with yellow accents. The top an bottom of each layer are decorated with little balls of icing. The lettering reads, "Marshall Happy Birthday"

And a view from the top! My boy has been begging to eat this cake all day. He is so excited!

Utah County Sheriff's Office Cake

Utah County Sheriff Cake
The Judicial branch of my local sheriff's department ordered this cake for their Columbus Day training lunch.
It is cherry chip with buttercream icing and vanilla villing. The decorations are done in tinted buttercream to match thier uniforms. The decoration is the badge they wear on the shouders of their uniforms with the offial seal in the middle.

Here's a picture of the borders I chose. I chose to do a shell crown with large stars and a shell and star border.

Here's a closer picture of the patch. If you click on it, it brings it up really big so you can check out the tiny details.
I've just started my 2nd decorating course. I've already learned how to make some sweet new flowers and a new border. Hopefully I'll get them on a cake soon.

Hatching Chick Cake

His Chick Cake
This is the bonus cake I made for the Colts Cake client. I made it for his girlfriend, who actually ordered the cake. She wanted him to order a chocolate cake, so I made a triple chocolate fudge cake just for her.
This cake is not filled - character cakes are not filled, but super moist. The edd is iced in chocolate real buttercream and the decorations are in tinted pure white buttercream. I added pink star flowers with pale green leaves and tendrils to the shell. The chick is covered in yellow stars with leaf-tip feathers on the wings and lttle feather top. The chick has a pink flower on her head.

The lettering is in dotted print style and reads "JJ's Chick". That's was my husband's idea. :)

Indianapolis Colts Cake

Indianapolis Colts Cake
This cake was a client cake ordered by a true Colts fan. (I know, I cross fooltball loyalty boundaries when it comes to cakes . . . . my Seahawks are playing the Colts right now!) He requested a confetti cake in a 3-D football shape with pistachio filling. He said it was good, even though I wasn't too sure about the pistachio part.

The football is iced in chocolate real buttercream and decorated with pure white buttercream tinted royal blue and grass green. I put the Colt's horseshoe over the top 2/3's of the ball and wrote "COLTS" below in block letters. I covered the cake board in green grass and a yard line. It came out just great!

Seattle Seahawks Cake

Seattle Seahawks Cake (my home team!)
So, after making a couple of other people's favorite teams, my husband requested that I make a Seattle Seahawks cake. Highly appropriate as 1. They're winning today (which is impressive, actually) and 2. I grew up in Seattle and Port Ludlow, Washington. Yes, I'm a transplant to Utah. I moved here to teach school about 3 years ago.
This is a triple chocolate fudge cake (has fudge chips in it . . . mmmmmm) covered in real semi sweet chocolate buttercream. It is filled with chocolate filling. It is a 3D football shape that I carved from an egg shape.

I decorated using vanilla buttercream tinted white, cobalt, navy, and green.

My husband, being brilliant about all things football, suggested I make the cake cooler by covering my cake board in icing to create a field and yard line effect. I really like this idea!

I think its going to taste FABULOUS! Oh, and this cake only requires 1 cake mix, so it fits into the $15 category. Hooray!

Minnesota Vikings Cake

Minnesota Vikings Cake (my first client cake!)
This is my first cake for a client. She ordered a Minnesota Vikings cake after seeing the Broncos one.

The cake is vanilla with a vanilla filling. It is iced in deep purple buttercream.

All the decorations were done in buttercream. The cake features a shell crown border with drop strings and stars. The bottom border is large white shells and meduim yellow shells. I got a little creative with that border and I really like the way it came out.

Here it is before I added the wording. Its a great shot of the cake!

Better picture of the border. The client seemed really pleased with her cake. Hooray! (I do pack completed cakes in cake boxes for travel, don't worry!)

Denver Broncos Cake

Denver Broncos Cake
My hubby is a HUGE Denver Broncos Football fan. When I told him I needed to practice, this was his suggestion.
Per his request, we've got a 9" round rainbow chip vanilla cake with pale orange "real buttercream" and a homemade raspberry jam filling.

The decorations are in standard buttercream in Bronco orange, white, and blue. (Hey, and they won!)

I decided to teach myself the shell crown border with strings and ribbon in blue. Pretty good for a first try!

Rose and Dot cake

Rose Cake
This is a red velvet cake with chocolate filling and white buttercream icing.

I added white polka dots . . . .

Pink roses with leaves . . . .
Pink drop swirl flowers and a shell border.
I was really pleased with the way this came out. Would make a pretty wedding cake top, anniversary cake, or sweet little girl cake! Hooray for project 4!

Yo Gabba Gabba Cupcakes

Yo Gabba Gabba Cupcakes or There's a Party in My Tummy!
If you have a toddler, you might be familiar with this show that the kids LOVE. My son is a huge fan, so project number three was just for him . . . . cupcakes of his friends from Yo Gabba Gabba. These were from the same batch as project two . . . vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese icing. Tinted buttercrem is piped on for the decoration.

These would be super fun at a 2nd or 3rd birthday party. Everyone could have their favorite!

Cupcake Time!

Clown Cupcakes
Blue Flower Cupcakes
My camera was having a bad day, but here is project number two . . . . cupcakes in blue! I made these for class.
The cupcakes are golden vanilla with a splash of dark chocolate. The icing is cream cheese and the decorations are in sky blue buttercream.

Shells and drop flowers.

Shells and piped heart.

Small cluster of drop flowers. I think it is my favorite.

Drop flowers and shells.
Sitting up clown . . . so cute!
Laying down clown . . . . even cuter! I think this one was my son's favorite. He ate it for breakfast the next day!

My First "OFFICIAL" Cake

Rainbow Cake
This is my first "official" cake because I made it in my cake class. Isn't it cute? Its a 9" two layer white vanilla cake with rainbow chips. The filling is white canilla buttercream with a layer of homemade tangy raspberry jam.

The icing is buttercream in a pale blue.

I think it came out pretty well!

Welcome!

So, I'm Monica and I've been "officially" decorating cakes for about 3 weeks.  I'm taking classes at a local craft store and we'll see where it takes me.  I've completed 1 cake, two cupcake sets, and will do a cake tonight.  I'll be posting pics of my cakes for you!  If you want a cake, since I'm starting out and need practice (and am getting tired of all that cake) you'll only pay for supplies for now.  Hope to have some cake on here soon!
